Kid’s Craft Box

As a kid, my mom and I did a lot of art and craft projects.  She is very artsy and there was always something creative happening.  I remember this big box of craft stuff that she would pull out on rainy days.  Connor has been in love with “crafts” since his first activity at our library a few summers ago.  Basically, crafts mean anything with colored paper and glue.  So I have put together a kid’s craft box that allows me to quickly pull out one box and has a wide variety of medium that we can use for just about any project.

I keep a large variety of different paper – both traditional construction paper, some brighter copy paper that comes in vivid colors and a few pieces of card stock from my own craft collection.

One of the things that I have found helpful is to keep a large envelop full of all kinds of small paper shapes scraps.  Perhaps it is leftovers from another project or sometimes when we are working on something, I might cut up left overs into specific shapes.  This way, the kids have quick access to a wide variety of cut paper instead of waiting for me to cut out something.  Often time, Connor just takes the shapes and turns it into some kind of picture.

I also have a small box of cut up tissue paper, again, left over from other projects that can be used again and again.  I found that the small box worked better at keeping it contained than an envelop.

Of course there are crayons!  I found that the toddler sized shoe boxes are great for all kinds of storage and this one keeps a nice collection of crayons that we can use for drawing and decorating.  They also have a box of crayons that I keep with their coloring books too.

I re-used some crystal light containers to store smaller supplies.  The name brand containers are clear so that you can easily see inside.  It keeps the small pieces together and having another container to open can help me keep the the toddler from doing too much damage. While everything in the kid’s craft box is safe for Connor to use, there are some things that Amelia needs some supervision with.

Sometimes there might be a unfinished project or two if a kiddo gets frustrated and needs a break.  He can always come back to something when he is feeling more patient.

It all fits nicely in this plastic box with a top that clicks shut.  It is nice to have a box that is all contained that I can pull out on a rainy day when the kids are mood for some creativity.  There is a lot that I don’t keep in here – paint, stronger glue, glitter. That if the kids had easy access to could end in disaster!  Or things that just won’t fit – like our growing stockpile of cardboard tubes!  But when Connor wanted to make more kites like he did in preschool, it was easy to pull out the box and let the kids design their own!
