My birth stories: I Don’t Regret My Cesarean Sections

Somehow I just knew that I would need a C-section.  Other women in my family did, including my mother.  My best girlfriend did, even my sister-in-law did.  It just seemed that more women I knew were having them then weren’t.  I was actually surprised when our hospital provided us with the stats – only about 30% of births were by C-section in the year previous to us.

While we were reading childbirth books and taking online classes, I was paying much more attention to the passages on C-sections than I was on labor.  We did the birth plan though.  I was fairly open to whatever might come.  I didn’t have a playlist or mood lighting.  I knew I wanted to use the birthing tub and have as many drugs as I could.

Yep, it all went out the window.  Labor came on hard and fast.  There was no way I was going to make it into that tub. And they wouldn’t give me any drugs.  My baby was in trouble.  His heart rate kept dipping and he wasn’t progressing at all.  I was!  I was dilating like crazy and in hard labor, but that baby wasn’t coming out.  So a C-section happened.  And thank goodness it did.  He wasn’t breathing when he finally did come out.  Fortunately, there was a team of doctors and nurses there to tend to him that might not have been there for a vaginal delivery.

So when were pregnant with baby #2 I knew it was our hospital’s policy not to do VBACs – vaginal birth after C-section.  Or so I thought.  One exam I was laying on the exam table and there posted on the bulletin board “We now do VBACs!” Oh dear!  I had to think about.  But I was scared.  I was already terrified of everything that could go wrong, never mind adding in the risk of uterine rupture.  What if I made the choice to try a VBAC and that put my daughter at risk?

I asked a few questions, particularly toward the end of my pregnancy.  One midwife kindly said after determining that my baby girl was not dropping into place, “maybe your hips aren’t made to have babies”.  Instead of feeling in adequate, I felt a sense of relief.  All in all it wouldn’t have mattered anyway.  The day I went into labor two weeks ahead of our due date (one week before the scheduled C-section) my daughter flipped herself breech after we had checked into the hospital.

I have never felt like I was inadequate for not having “natural” births.  I felt like I made the best decision for how my babies needed to be born.

  1. Isn’t it wonderful that c-sections are a safe option. I had the extremes, natural and c-section with my 2. I was really nervous about the c-section because my mother had complications. Even though I had complications too I don’t regret it. I thought I might I don’t at all!

  2. I’ve had two c sections as well. It doesn’t matter which way you deliver. As long as the baby is healthy! You did a great job. Your first labor story reminds me of my brothers and his wife’s. Same exact thing happened to her and their baby boy. New follower! Love your blog!

  3. What a wonderful story! My twins were both breech and both around 6 pounds, so a c-section was inevitable for me. I honestly didn’t mind one little bit that I couldn’t have them “the old-fashioned way.” A c-section was the best thing for all 3 of us and that’s all that mattered.

  5. Both of my births were emergency c-sections. I don’t regret it because in both cases my kids or I would’ve died without them. Natural birth is great — for those that want and can have them. But, I don’t think c-section moms should be looked down upon.

    You have such cute kiddos!

  6. I really enjoyed this post! I have no idea why people are so judgmental of C-Sections. I had a vaginal birth (with drugs!), but, truth be told, I was hoping all along for a C-Section. The thought of “natural birth” terrified me to the point where I couldn’t even look forward to my induction. Besides, it doesn’t matter how these sweet babes get here, as long as they get here! I guess it is just something else for people to be judgmental about.

  7. It’s nice to hear other women who don’t feel inadequate for having a C-section rather than a vaginal birth. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had women (and appallingly, a man) say to me “While, you really didn’t give birth since you didn’t do it vaginally”. Oy! Found you through That Friday Blog Hop.

  8. I was so bummed when I found out that I was going to have a c-section with my third baby. He too decided to turn breech and I had a anterior placenta which made turning him too risky in my opinion. At the end of the day, it was the best choice because my baby was healthy and happy. 🙂 Thank you for sharing your story, your babies are adorable.

  9. I did have a c-section and obviously for medical reasons don’t regret it at all but do feel somehow that I missed out on full labour, even though I know it could have been awful.

Thanks so much for sharing at the Friday Baby Shower – I have featured you at this week’s party, Alice @ Mums Make Lists x

    • Oh WOW! Thank you so much! Sometimes when I see labor scenes on TV I think I might have missed out of something. And then I remember the labor pains I did have!

  10. Hi Ann,
In the end, I am glad to know that your babies and you were born just fine. That’s the whole point of it, isn’t it?! I am having looks for different reasons: we are doing a home birth. My labors go so quickly that there is no time for pain meds. We figured that by the time we got a babysitter for our 2 kids, made it to the hospital, and got upstairs, the baby would probably already be half way out. A home birth just seems like a logical thing to do. Great post.

Thank you for linking up on the Thumping Thursdays Blog Hop. Great to have you.

    Sincerely,
    Karina
